Review - NEHRU - The Invention of India by Shashi Tharoor

Well , I can confidently say that my summer holidays went quite productive because the books which I opted to read and especially non fictional were exhilarating and I was poured with great facts and knowledge which were unclear to me and helped me to understand better about some of the few ideologies and incidents which are very essential to understand today because the facts are portrayed in a very distorted manner especially about the deeds and misdeeds of Indian freedom struggle and post independence era.

Thanks to one and only Dr. Shashi Tharoor and being a Delhi University undergraduate student it's my honor to study one of my profound alumni. This summer holidays I decided to read one of his book " Nehru - The Invention of India " 2018 edition and honestly I was stunned after reading this book because this book nourished my knowledge very well to understand the better image of Nehru and his role in politics which helped him shaping in the formation of an independent India.

Let's talk about the book now. This book is a biography of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru with the interpretation of Dr. Shashi Tharoor on his life, his political developments and his eminent impact on the post independent India. He has mentioned all the facts and his steadily personal growth from the struggle of Motilal Nehru (Father of Jawaharlal Nehru) to produce a child to the birth of Jawaharlal Nehru and then how he pursued his education in Harrow and Cambridge , spending seventeen years of his life in England , his risen interest in Indian politics , his long distance relationship with his father and all the struggle he faced in his life like spending ten years in jail , his separation with his daughter and many more captivating facts and stories. To know more you have to read it ! and I can assure you that it's worth reading.

(Index Part II)

So , Dr. Tharoor divided this whole book into the ten chapters as you can see in the above image through which he eloquently defined the developments of Jawaharlal Nehru's life. When it comes to language , Do I need to comment on that also ? After all it's Dr. Shashi Tharoor works and I am pretty confident that you will find many unheard words which definitely enhance the readers vocabulary. I got through from many interesting words which defined the whole separate story , one of them which I would like to share was " Dante-and-Beatrice way " which is basically the famous painting of "Holiday" in which he portrayed the love story of Dante and Beatrice and he used this phrase to describe a particular love scene in Gandhi family and if you want to know about that love scene then you probably have to read this book.

The main fundamentals of the Nehruvianism which Dr. Tharoor comprehensively described in his book was his main four pillars i.e. " Democracy" , " Secularism" , " Socialism"  and "Foreign Policy". Jawaharlal Nehru was considered and he himself considered as the champion of International Affairs and that can be easily observed by his " Non Alignment Policy " and many more. His relationship with Gandhi was very fine and loving , Jawaharlal Nehru considered him as his second father. The bond they had helped him in a smooth coordination to make a new independent India. Words are not enough to highlights the facts of this book in this blog or else you will get bore 😅 .

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book but........
I have a complain and doubt about two facts which I found missing in this book , that were :
  • "Gandhi wanted the dissolvement of congress after the independence" . He didn't mentioned about this fact while explaining all the facts related to pre independence developments.
  • He didn't  mentioned much about the incident of offering Jinnah to be the Prime Minister of the newly becoming united India to avoid partition. I was curious to know about the Jawaharlal Nehru's reaction on it , but unfortunately I didn't found anything much related to this episode.

Overall at the end , I would say that this book is worth reading ! It literally opened my mind and made me more curious to study about the after generations of Nehru . I would like to score 9/10 to this book.

Thank you Dr. Tharoor for writing such precious text.

You can purchase this book either from Flipkart or Amzaon .

Hope you enjoyed my blog and please do subscribe :)
Thank You

The rich history of Deccan tells us about the rulers of Deccan, their achievements, their life style and their architecture. We can learn about the prosperity of the Deccan through books and research but there is one place that can make you feel the aura of the ancient Deccan and their achievements i.e. Hospet City.    (image source : High IQ) The true meaning of this word is "New City". It was called as Hosapete earlier but later the name was amended into Hospet. This city is situated in the heart of Karnataka.
