Month of June and July are the months of holidays and relaxing for school and college students because these are the hottest months of the year and we are privileged with "summer vacations" in these months . Well I am an undergraduate student in Delhi University , so I thought to utilize my holidays with reading some interesting books rather than opting for internships in such scorching heat by sitting at home under the AC while having snacks . It sounds so "Lethargic" .... LOL .
But eventually it turned very fruitful . This was so because , the list of books I decided to read were all non fictional and all the books were given to me by my dad and one of them was " Why I am a Liberal " by Sagarika Ghose . I am just done with this book and I am totally stunned by this book . Hats off to her !!🙆
Now , Lets talk about the book and my reviews on it .
The book as her name suggests " Why I am a Liberal " is mainly and centric about the individual liberalism and how one can be liberal in all spheres of life whether it is political , economical . social , religiously and importantly in feminist perspective . The current political scenario of our country is abolishing the culture of liberalism and attempts by the state power to drive it's citizens away from the concept of Liberalism to which our law makers always emphasized while forming the independent nation. I loved the language of Sagarika Ghose , she defined her thoughts and messages so clearly and fluently which kept the interest alive and gave me more thirst to read it further without stopping . Most interestingly this book rejuvenates the argumentative culture of the Indian society , sometimes to me it seems like she is very inspired from the Amartya Sen and one of his engrossing writing " The Argumentative Indian " .
(Disclaimer : This book is not for hardcore right wing followers and especially for the followers of current ruling political party , it would be not pleasant for them digest their facts )
The above disclaimer does not mean that this book is anti nationalist because she equally mentioned the smashing facts about the left wing political parties as well , who ruled earlier . Most importantly this book is not only about the writers opinion but it's more about the numerous facts and recorded incidents that took place in our country from post-independence era till now and based on those facts the observations and opinion forms automatically about the deeds and misdeeds of political parties to shape the country and it's citizens according to their ideology .
This book is written into five chapters which includes various essays of each chapter . My favorite chapter and which literally opened my mind was the last one " The Liberal Women " . It really changed my vision for the women's and society which do not let live women's independently even when we worship various deities in Hinduism , the condition is very worse for women's . The worship is only limited to the temples . Women's are deprived of their basic fundamental human rights like they cant be open to about their sexual desires freely and many more and I get to know about many words which I never heard like Promiscuity , Licentiousness ,Voyeuristic etc. which really enhanced my knowledge .
There are endless things and facts which amused me and inspired me a lot by reading this wonderful book and at many places she mentioned about the facts of Indra Gandhi which excited me and made me more curious to read her one more book Indra : India's Most Powerful Prime Minister .
The last thing I would like to say or reply to Sagarika Ghose , after reading her book .
Thank you Sagarika Ghose for such precious writing .
